| Feature: E-Roads to Independence |
Today’s technology enables individuals, communities, and even developing nations with limited resources to prosper and become self-sufficient by providing easily accessible knowledge and important skills training via the Internet. In 1994, the late Peter Drucker, one of the world's most influential business gurus, wrote
“We have a new economic order in which knowledge, not labor or raw material or capital, is the key resource; a social order in which inequality based on knowledge is a major challenge; and a policy in which government cannot be looked to for solving social and economic problems." * That’s where e-learning comes in. JED New Media’s goal is to offer necessary skills and competencies in an easily accessible way for people in the business world at a reasonable cost. We also work with community-based organizations to provide e-solutions. For example, we developed a JEDlet titled "Understanding Financial Statements’’ with the Women’s Entrepreneur Society (WES), worked with the Alliance des Radios Communautaires (ARC) to create four French language tutorials related to community radio, and produced two JEDlet tutorials on “Dealing with Dementia” with the University of Ottawa to address today’s burgeoning generation of caregivers. Noteworthy Snippets Attention French Teachers! Beginning February 2007, a free preview of "Aline au pays des merveilles" will be available for viewing at www.jedlet.com featuring a new episode every week. Return as often as you wish to sample this unique, interactive tool aimed at supporting your students of advanced French. JED New Media’s marketing director, Anthony Kez, recently returned from a tour of the Czech Republic and Hungary. He comments on the e-learning landscape there: “On average 92% of individuals studying a foreign language choose English, and many are seeking viable e-learning solutions.” The 2006 Online Learning Symposium held recently in Calgary, Alberta was once again rich in content and contacts, and two sessions were particularly noteworthy. Stevan Kalmon, coordinator of the Council on 21st Century Learning, questioned commonly held notions of education based on a custodial and industrial model. And, Leslie Peppler and Hal Welke highlighted the seriousness with which Alberta Education treats its branding and trademark issues and examined the potential legal and financial ramifications of failing to manage copyrights associated with open source and vendor-developed product in their "Copyright & Vendors: Lining Up Your IP Ducks" presentation.

| Megatrends: E-sufficiency: E-learning and Self-Sufficiency |
René J. Aerdts, Ph.D., EDS Fellow, EDS Upon first looking at e-learning and self-sufficiency, these two terms seem to be unrelated, but upon closer examination, they do contain tremendous synergy. In today’s society of self-service, personalization, and increased frequency of information access, people are increasingly becoming self-sufficient. The ubiquity of the Internet in conjunction with the omni-presence of wireless access has made people more independent and yearning for instantaneous access to information. These characteristics of independence and immediacy lead to self-management and self-sufficiency, as products and services can now be accessed based on the consumer’s needs and time schedule. However, instant training capability will be needed in this environment, paving the way for small, instantaneous, and to-the-point e-learning snippets to improve the consumer’s experience. | BACK TO TOP |
