| Feature : E-challenges and Expectations in China |
Many are scrambling to sell online learning to China. And, with a billion plus population suddenly hungry for every kind of training, it seems like a golden opportunity. But those not looking before leaping into these untested waters might flounder. Westerners have many misconceptions about doing business in this part of the world. William J. Rothwell, author of “Scaling the Great Wall: Training in China,” which appeared December 2004’s issue of Training Magazine, comments, “Assuming that China’s market is the same as the U.S. and marketing approaches that work in the U.S. will work in China is a mistake. Chinese people are more trusting of people who can speak their language and understand their culture, though they have great respect for Western expertise.” Here are few more comments from experts in the article, “It is important that multinational companies get away from thinking that one approach fits all cultures. Such thinking remains a common ground for complaint in China” Xaozhen (Jenny) Yan, Director Motorola University, China. “Only those with an innovative business model, carefully segmented marketing and specific quality delivery will prosper.” Nick Arnold, President of Leadership for Life and Campus International. But those who do their homework will prosper as it is estimated that by 2005, the e-learning market in China is projected to be worth $37 million. (Source: reprinted with permission from Training Magazine. Visit www.trainingmag.com ) As Rothwell points out, the Chinese say,” You can get anything you want in China--as long as you are patient enough to wait.” But although patience might be a virtue; prior knowledge is always gold. | Standing Ovation : Project Hope |
This issue we salute China Youth Development Foundation's Project Hope, an innovative program designed to help educate poor students in remote regions. This is a non-profit, non-government project that relies solely on donations, some of which come from companies like Motorola, Inc. which has always been a huge supporter of this initiative. To date, billions of dollars have been raised to finance the education of close to 3 million students and build schools, distance learning centers, libraries and video centers, train teachers and initiate scholarships. Still, millions of Chinese children go without educational opportunities each year due to poverty; more help is needed. JED New Media is donating complimentary JEDlet tutorials to Project Hope. | Megatrend : China-- Challenges in Training |
René J. Aerdts, Ph.D., EDS Fellow, EDS With around 20% of the world population, China has the momentum and capability to create the next generation of e-learning and become one of the leaders in this area However, there are several barriers to overcome in order for this to take off, such as communication and technology infrastructure and automated translation capabilities. Not only is China a vast country in size, it is also diverse in its dialects. Moreover, there is tremendous pressure to rapidly become a knowledge-based work environment, instead of remaining a labor-based workforce. China is moving fast in creating the technology infrastructure needed to support this change, allowing for increased growth opportunities. This indicates that in the foreseeable future, China, with its 1.3 billion inhabitants, certainly has the potential to create the next generation of e-learning. | BACK TO TOP |
